I find it hard to believe paper cone speakers could have been considered "premium" in 1996.

OEM radios have improved a lot in the last two decades. They realized that a good sound system can actually help sell a car! Then they went overboard and started putting super-shitty "Infotainment" systems in that just piss people off. Should have stopped with the good speakers!

I'm with you here. The factory head unit isn't bad at all.
The speakers I swapped in are Alpine 6" with a separate tweeter I got for free.
I have the London Symphony orchestra on at just over half volume and it sounds awesome.
